Born in Burma to Methodist Missionaries, Long moved with his family to Pittsburgh at the age of three. After schooling in England (Exeter) and the US (Harvard), Long served as a reporter in New York, eventually returning to Pittsburgh where, in 1920, he became Head of the English Department at the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now known as Carnegie Mellon University).
In 1929 Long, with his wife and child, moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he helped found an organization called Writers' Editions that published works by local authors, including Pittsburgh Memoranda. (Source: Wikipedia)
