John Kerfoot (1816 - 1881), born in Dublin, Ireland, to a family of Scotch-Irish descent, moved to Pennsylvania with his family at the age of three. After studies at the Flushing Institute in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, under the tutelage of the Reverend William Augustus Muhlenberg, Kerfoot held a position as the head of the College of St. James in Maryland during the Civil War and subsequently served as President of Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut after it reopened 1864. Shortly thereafter he accepted the elected position as Bishop of the Diocese of Pittsburgh in 1866. (Wikipedia)
