Joseph Sturge was a 19th-century English Quaker and traveler known for his anti-slavery stances and work with abolitionists. In 1841, Sturge traveled to the United States to examine the state of slavery which prompted him to write this work. Other contents include Sturge'’s voyages in which he encountered Chinese cultures, Portuguese merchants, artists, seeing the Niagara Falls, but most importantly the state of American slavery. He dives fully into descriptions on slave jails, successes of abolitionists, and the development of the American Anti-Slavery Society.
